She's just casually giving out exposition while changing mags.

Now the part of ash being harmful to Skinwalkers is based on actual lore from the Skinwalker tales... kinda. Ash is mostly used to ward them off or to nullify their presence, and used for blessing rituals by medicine men. Keep in mind that I'm going off of memory, so I could have some things wrong. Although, I'm not why ash is the thing that stops Skinwalkers. That one baffles me.

Im sure someone had abunch of it lying around and one said to another 'got a use for this stuff? Its starting to clutter my living room'

Like a lot of 'magical mythology' it probably started as something else and shifted over time. For example, it might have been something special that was burned, so the ash is *leftovers* from the original ritual. Sorta like how silver bullets (vs werewolves) started as melted down Virgin Mary medals. It wasn't the silver per se, it was the holy blessing, just turned into a form factor that can be shot from a gun.
